Shopify Email: When It's Enough

Affiliate disclosure: MerchantInbox is a Shopify affiliate, so this page includes one link to Shopify that may earn us a commission if you sign up through it, at no extra cost to you. That does not change what we recommend here.

What this page helps you decide

You run a Shopify store, and Shopify's own email tool is already sitting in your admin. You want to know whether it is enough for now, and what would tell you that you have outgrown it.

For many stores, the honest answer is to stay where you are. We do not rank tools here, and we do not name a winner. We have not used Shopify Messaging ourselves for this page. Prices and plan rules change, so check Shopify's own pages before you rely on any number here.

Short answer

It is probably enough if you send a few campaigns a month, your list is modest, and you mainly want newsletters, promotions and the ready-made automatic emails, all inside Shopify.

It may be worth looking at another tool if you need automatic emails that go beyond Shopify's ready-made set, if your monthly sending is large enough that the per-email cost adds up, or if you need reporting and personal touches that the built-in reports and fields do not give you.

Check before you decide what your monthly sending will cost once you pass the free allowance. Text messages are billed separately, per message, so count those too.

What Shopify Messaging is

Shopify's built-in email tool now goes by "Shopify Messaging, formerly known as Shopify Email", because the same tool now sends email, text messages (SMS) and WhatsApp messages. From here on, we call it Shopify Messaging.

Shopify makes it, and it comes installed on your store by default. It works directly with your products and customer list, so there is no separate account to set up.

Shopify's help docs list Shopify Messaging for stores on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans, and your store needs an active, paid plan to send to your subscribers. Shopify's pages describe plan eligibility slightly differently, so check what your plan includes.

Where it fits well

Shopify Messaging tends to fit stores like these:

  • A newer store with a small list. The first 10,000 emails each month are free, which covers a lot of sending for a small store.
  • An owner who does the marketing personally. Everything sits in the admin you already use.
  • A store that wants the common automatic emails without extra setup. The ready-made set includes abandoned cart and checkout reminders, welcome emails, thank-you and upsell emails after a purchase, win-back, birthday and VIP emails.
  • A store that does not want another app or another bill. Extra sending is added to your normal Shopify bill.
  • A store selling mainly to the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom or a handful of European countries that wants simple text messages alongside email.

Where it starts to pinch

These are the limits a growing store is most likely to notice, all from Shopify's help documents.

Automatic emails. You choose from Shopify's ready-made set. For a custom sequence, or one that involves another app, Shopify's help docs say you build it in Shopify Flow, a separate app that Shopify also makes. Only the three abandonment automations (checkout, cart and product browse) can send text messages. Welcome and after-purchase automations are email only. If you turn on two similar automations, customers get both.

Who receives what. A campaign goes to all your email subscribers or to one customer segment. Automatic emails go only to subscribers by default, except abandoned checkout, which can go to all customers.

Sending volume. Shopify sets "safe send limits" on how many people you can email in a day or a week. The limits grow over time, but Shopify does not publish the numbers. It warns that sending five times your normal volume in one day can get your mail blocked, and suggests building up four to six weeks before a busy season. On lists over 1,000 people, a feature called Smart delivery is on by default and skips people who have not opened or clicked recent emails. Shopify can also pause your sending if your emails draw steady spam complaints.

Your sender address. Until you connect your own domain, Shopify sends your email from a Shopify address instead of your store's name. Connecting your domain is a normal setup step for any email tool.

Reports. Each campaign has a fixed report covering opens, clicks, orders, sales and a few more. By default, a sale is credited to the last click that brought the customer to your store. Shopify notes that some figures are estimates, and that a customer who reads an email and later visits your store directly will not show up in the email's results.

Design and personal touches. The email editor has set limits, and the footer cannot be removed. You can code your own email or import an HTML file, within size limits. Personal details are limited to name, email, city, state or province and country. You cannot attach files such as PDFs, and emails are not translated automatically.

Text messages. Text messages can go only to customers in a short list of countries: Canada, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States (not including Puerto Rico). Shopify changes this list from time to time, so check the current one. In the United States and Canada you register a toll-free number first and customers cannot reply to that number. Some product categories cannot use text marketing at all, including alcohol, CBD, cannabis, tobacco, vaping, firearms, fireworks and gambling. WhatsApp messages cannot be sent to customers in the United States.

Pricing snapshot

Item What Shopify publishes
Free emails each month 10,000. Unused emails do not carry over. Abandoned checkout automation emails are always free and do not count toward the 10,000.
After the free emails $1 per 1,000 extra emails up to 300,000. $0.65 per 1,000 after 300,000. $0.55 per 1,000 after 750,000.
How you pay Extra email costs are added to your Shopify bill for the previous month, listed as Marketing emails.
Text messages (SMS) Billed separately, per message. For example, $0.012 per message to US numbers, plus $2.15 a month for each toll-free number used in the United States and Canada.

A few plain points to keep in mind:

  • Emails are counted per person. One campaign to 800 subscribers counts as 800 emails.
  • Automatic emails count toward the free 10,000, except abandoned checkout emails.
  • Shopify's own example: two campaigns in one month to 6,000 subscribers each is 12,000 emails. The first 10,000 are free, and the other 2,000 cost $2.
  • You can set a monthly spending alert. It sends you an email, but it does not stop charges.
  • Shopify's pages do not all describe which plans get the free allowance the same way. Check what your plan includes.

Signs you have outgrown it

Wanting text messages is not, on its own, a reason to leave. Shopify Messaging sends them now, and bills them separately. These are the signs that matter more.

  1. You need automatic emails beyond the ready-made set. Shopify's help docs send custom sequences, and steps that involve another app, to Shopify Flow. Flow keeps you inside Shopify. If you would rather build every sequence in one place, look at dedicated email tools with their own sequence builder.
  2. Your sending costs are growing with your volume. Past 10,000 emails a month you pay per thousand, and text messages are charged per message. If those charges keep climbing, add up a normal month and a busy month, and compare that with what other tools would charge for the same volume.
  3. You rely on big, sudden sends. Shopify limits how many people you can email per day or week, and it warns against large one-day spikes. If your business depends on flash sales to your whole list and planning weeks ahead does not suit you, ask any tool you consider how it handles sudden large sends.
  4. You need more from your reports. The built-in reports are fixed, sales are credited one way by default, and some figures are estimates. If you need to see results a different way to make decisions, check whether another tool offers those reports before you move.
  5. Your customers are outside what it covers. Emails go out only in the language you write them in, and personal details are limited to a few fields. Text messages reach only a short list of countries, and some product categories cannot use them. For customers in other countries, Shopify itself suggests a third-party app. If you sell in several languages or to many countries, that may be the point to look further.

If none of these sound like your store, staying put is a sound choice.

If you move: what to look at

If you do look further, start with the one sign above that pushed you, and judge every option on that first.

Tools such as Omnisend and Klaviyo are separate apps with their own pricing. Compare what each would cost for your list and your monthly sending, and check how and where you would be billed. Ask how long it would take to rebuild the automatic emails you already rely on.

If you are weighing Omnisend, our Omnisend review covers who it fits.

We do not name a single right tool for every store. Choose the one you can actually run every week.

What store owners say

As of September 24, 2026, Shopify Messaging had a 4.8 rating from 4,529 reviews on the Shopify App Store. That is a popularity signal, not proof that it fits your store.

We read a sample of recent public reviews, mostly lower-rated ones. This is not a scientific study, and we are not giving the app a rating of our own.

  • What people like: it is simple to start, it works inside Shopify, and the free allowance is good value for straightforward campaigns.
  • What people find frustrating: templates and design controls that feel basic, campaigns that reach only part of a list (which fits how Shopify describes Smart delivery), extra charges on top of the Shopify subscription, and trouble getting text messaging approved in some cases.

How we put this page together

We have not used Shopify Messaging ourselves for this page, and we have not run a hands-on test. Everything here comes from Shopify's public pages, its help documents and its App Store listing, all checked on September 24, 2026.

Don't have a store yet?

If you are still getting set up and do not have a store yet, you can create a Shopify store on Shopify's website (affiliate link: MerchantInbox may earn a commission if you sign up). Check the current plans and trial terms on Shopify's site before you choose one.

Where this leaves you

For many stores, Shopify Messaging is enough. It is already installed, the first 10,000 emails each month are free, and it covers the common automatic emails and simple text messages. Look further when your automations, your sending costs, your reports or your customers' locations and languages have clearly moved past what it covers.
