Klaviyo Alternatives for Shopify Stores

Disclosure

This page contains no affiliate links, and nothing you click on this page earns MerchantInbox a commission. MerchantInbox is a Shopify affiliate, and Shopify Messaging, Shopify's own email tool, is one of the options on this page. Our separate review of Shopify's built-in email tool, linked below, has one labelled link to Shopify that may earn us a commission if someone opens a new Shopify store through it. That relationship did not shape this page. We have no affiliate or paid relationship with Klaviyo or with any other tool on this page. If this page ever gets affiliate links, we will say so here, at the top of the page.

What this page helps you decide

If you use Klaviyo, or were about to, and are having second thoughts, this page is organised by your reason for leaving. Each option gets the same plain notes on who it suits and what to watch for. We do not rank the tools or name a winner.

We have not used these tools ourselves for this page, and prices change often, so check each company's own pages before you rely on any number.

Short answer

Start with why you want to leave, and compare what each option would cost at your own list size, because each company counts contacts differently. If Klaviyo feels like too much to run, a tool that works inside your Shopify admin, such as Shopify's own email tool or Seguno, is one simpler kind of option to look at, and if you mainly want text messages, the choice comes down to price and fit, since Klaviyo sends texts too. If Klaviyo is working for you and you can afford it, staying put is a sound choice.

Before you look elsewhere, name your reason

Store owners give different reasons for leaving. The sections below follow four common ones, so start with the one closest to yours.

In forums, and in comparison articles (many written by competing email companies), the reasons given most often are cost as the list grows, complexity, and frustration with support. These are opinions, not facts about Klaviyo.

Klaviyo's own Help pages say that since February 18, 2025, for customers who pay by card, your email plan must cover every active profile, meaning anyone Klaviyo can email, whatever their consent status. So people who never subscribed can still count toward your bill, although suppressed profiles (people Klaviyo will no longer email) do not. If your list grows past your tier, Klaviyo moves you up automatically. It does not move you back down unless you choose a lower plan yourself or turn on its auto-downgrade setting.

If the bill keeps rising as your list grows

Every tool here costs more as your list, or your sending, grows. Seguno and Drip are described below the table, and the others under later reasons.

Last verified: September 25, 2026.

Each company counts contacts differently, so the same store can land in a different tier with each tool.

Contacts Klaviyo Email (for comparison) Omnisend Standard / Pro Shopify Messaging (our calculation, 4 / 10 emails per contact) Privy Email Mailchimp Essentials / Standard Seguno Drip
What is counted Active profiles (anyone it can email, whatever their consent) Billable contacts (subscribers and non-subscribers, not unsubscribes) Emails sent Mailable contacts (people who opted in) Contacts Subscribers (people who opted in) Active people and email sends (highest usage in the previous month)
500 $20 $16 / $59 $0 / $0 $30 $13 / $20 $35 $39
2,500 $60 $44 / $59 $0 / $15 $60 $45 / $60 $35 $39
5,000 $100 $81 / $90 $10 / $40 $90 $75 / $100 $55 $89
10,000 $150 $132 / $150 $30 / $90 $165 $110 / $135 $95 $154
25,000 $400 $282 / $400 $90 / $240 $390 $270 / $310 $215 (Professional plan) $369
Free plan 250 profiles, 500 emails a month 250 contacts, 500 emails a month 10,000 emails a month on a paid Shopify plan None (15-day trial) 250 contacts, 500 sends a month 250 subscribers None (14-day trial)

What the table assumes. Each store sends four campaigns a month to its whole list, plus automatic emails. Prices are in US dollars, billed monthly, without introductory offers. By our count, four campaigns fit inside every plan's email allowance. At exactly 25,000 subscribers, Seguno's calculator prices only its Professional plan.

The Shopify Messaging column is our calculation, not a price Shopify publishes. Shopify gives 10,000 free emails a month, then charges $1 per 1,000 extra emails up to 300,000. The first figure assumes four emails per contact, which covers the campaigns only, and the second assumes ten, to allow for automatic emails. Abandoned checkout emails are left out because Shopify says they are always free. The paid Shopify plan you need is not included.

Reading the table. Among the plan prices in the table, no single tool is lowest at every size. Privy, for example, lists less than Klaviyo at 5,000 and 25,000 contacts but more at 10,000. At 25,000, Omnisend Pro and Klaviyo's Email plan both list $400. Tools that count only people who opted in may suit a store with many customers who never subscribed. Run each calculator with your own count on the same day. For those two side by side, see our comparison of Omnisend and Klaviyo.

Seguno

Seguno runs inside the Shopify admin, and its charges appear on your normal Shopify bill. It charges only for subscribers, which it defines as Shopify customers who have agreed to receive marketing emails. It is free up to 250 subscribers, with unlimited sending and pre-built automations, according to its App Store listing. The paid Standard plan adds custom automations, browse and cart abandonment emails, re-sending to people who did not open, and back-in-stock alerts. Its App Store listing shows the Built for Shopify badge.

Who it suits. A store that wants email managed inside Shopify, on the Shopify bill, and priced only on people who opted in.

What to watch for. Seguno's pricing page and App Store listing do not list sending text messages, and its listing says it works with Postscript, a texting app, so plan on a separate app for texts. It lists more than Klaviyo's Email plan at 500 subscribers, and less at the other four sizes in the table, remembering that it counts only subscribers.

Drip

Drip's pricing page lists a price for each list size, with unlimited email sends, up to 50 automated workflows and segments that update on their own. Its help centre and its App Store listing also say the bill can depend on how many emails you send, and that billing is based on your highest usage in the previous month. There is no free plan, only a 14-day trial.

Who it suits. A store that wants one list-size price with room for a fair number of automated sequences, and is willing to confirm with Drip how sending volume affects the bill.

What to watch for. Drip has only 56 reviews on the Shopify App Store, far fewer than the other tools here, so there is less public feedback to go on. It lists more than Klaviyo's Email plan at 500 and 10,000 contacts, and less at 2,500, 5,000 and 25,000. Its pricing page does not list texting.

Shopify says the Built for Shopify badge marks apps that meet its highest standards for performance, design and integration. When we checked on September 25, 2026, Seguno was the only tool on this page whose App Store listing showed it.

If Klaviyo feels too complex to run yourself

Klaviyo is not hard for everyone, but some owners find it more than they need. Seguno, described above, also runs inside the Shopify admin.

Shopify Messaging (the built-in store email tool)

Shopify's own email tool used to be called Shopify Email. It is now called Shopify Messaging, and it sends text messages as well as email. It comes installed by default inside the Shopify admin, so there is no separate account. It offers a fixed set of ready-made automatic emails, and anything custom is built in Shopify Flow, a separate Shopify app. It charges by the email, not by the contact. Shopify's help docs list it for the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans. For more, see our review of Shopify's built-in email tool.

Who it suits. A store that wants to stay inside Shopify, sends modest volumes, and is happy with the ready-made automatic emails.

What to watch for. You get fewer choices than in a dedicated email app. Past the free 10,000 emails a month, costs grow with how much you send, so add up a busy month.

If you mainly want text messages

Klaviyo sells text messages as a separate add-on that works on any plan. Its calculator showed $15 a month for 1,000 US texts from a toll-free number, and its free plan includes $5 of texting a month.

Shopify Messaging also sends texts, at $0.012 per US message plus $2.15 a month for each toll-free number used in the United States and Canada.

Omnisend

Omnisend puts email, text messages and pop-ups in one app. Its free plan sends up to 500 emails a month to a maximum of 250 contacts, and Pro includes unlimited email subject to fair use. It charges by billable contacts, which include people who have not subscribed, and its help docs say your price can rise even if your subscriber count stays the same. For more, see our Omnisend review.

Who it suits. A store that wants email, texts and pop-ups managed in one place, with a free plan to start on.

What to watch for. If you took out a paid Omnisend plan on or after May 4, 2026, you need Pro to buy text credits, and texts are not included in the Pro price. Omnisend lists US texts from $0.009 each at the lowest spend level.

Privy

Privy offers pop-ups and sign-up forms alongside email and text messages. Its email plan charges only for mailable contacts, meaning people who have agreed to marketing, and includes unlimited emails. The $30 plan includes 250 US text credits a month, 1,250 credits bring it to $45, and unused credits roll over. There is no free plan, only a 15-day trial that leaves out texts unless you ask Privy. Privy says its text prices include carrier fees.

Who it suits. A store that mainly wants to grow its list with pop-ups, then send email and a small number of texts to people who opted in.

What to watch for. Its App Store listing says Privy may bill some charges separately from your Shopify invoice.

Or keep texts in a separate app

Some stores keep email where it is and add a texting app such as Postscript. Its pricing page lists a Starter plan with no monthly fee and a $49 monthly minimum spend, at $0.009 per US text plus carrier fees, with no profile fees. Those rates cover the United States and Canada. Postscript showed 4.7 from 1,207 reviews on the Shopify App Store when we checked.

Who it suits. A store whose main goal is texting and which is happy to run email in another tool.

What to watch for. A small texting programme may still pay the $49 minimum each month, and you would be running two apps instead of one.

Text prices are not quoted the same way. Klaviyo and Privy say their prices include carrier fees, Postscript adds them on top, and we could not confirm from Omnisend's or Shopify's pages whether theirs include them.

If your needs are simpler than Klaviyo

If you send a newsletter and a few automatic emails, a lighter setup is a reasonable choice. Shopify Messaging may cover everything, since a modest list sending a few campaigns a month can often stay inside the free 10,000 emails. Seguno's and Omnisend's free plans each cover up to 250 people.

Mailchimp

Mailchimp is a familiar name, listed on the Shopify App Store by Intuit Mailchimp. Its free plan covers up to 250 contacts and 500 sends a month, with no more than 250 sends a day. If you pass 250 contacts, Mailchimp holds your sending until you upgrade.

Who it suits. A store owner who already knows Mailchimp and has simple needs.

What to watch for. Essentials allows up to 4 flow steps in its automations. On paid plans, Mailchimp bills you automatically for going over your limits. Texting needs a paid plan, an application and a supported country.

When staying on Klaviyo makes sense

Staying is a sound choice if the automatic emails and segments you rely on are working, if you know the tool well, if the cost is steady compared with your sales, or if rebuilding elsewhere would cost more time than it saves.

If cost is the only worry, try a smaller step first, such as suppressing profiles you no longer need to email. Klaviyo's Help pages say suppressed profiles do not count toward your bill. Check your billable count before and after any change, then choose a lower tier on the Billing page once the count has updated.

If you do leave, switch carefully

  1. Export your list with each person's consent status, so you keep a record of who agreed to receive marketing.
  2. List the automatic emails you rely on, starting with abandoned cart, and how long each would take to rebuild.
  3. Set up your own sending domain on the new tool.
  4. Run both tools for a short time, until the new automatic emails are live.
  5. Then downgrade or cancel Klaviyo.

Moving subscribers between tools involves their permissions, so check the rules that apply to your store. This page is not legal advice.

Shopify App Store ratings

On September 25, 2026, the Shopify App Store showed Shopify Messaging at 4.8 from 4,535 reviews, Privy at 4.5 from 4,213, Klaviyo at 4.7 from 3,326, Omnisend at 4.7 from 3,185, Mailchimp at 4.8 from 1,486, Seguno at 4.8 from 730 and Drip at 4.5 from 56. That is a popularity signal, not proof that a tool fits your store.

How we put this page together

We have not run a hands-on test of any of these tools. Everything here comes from each company's pricing pages, help docs and Shopify App Store listings, checked on September 25, 2026. Where a company's pages disagreed, we used the more careful wording. Forum comments appear only as what individual commenters report, not as facts, and anything we could not confirm on an official page is left out. You can read more about how we review.

Where this leaves you

Start from your main reason for leaving, then compare what each option would cost for your list, counted the way that company counts it. Staying on Klaviyo is a fair answer, and so is any option above that fits your reason and your budget.
